The theme for the 2008 program is the "Physics of Amusement Parks". Participants will become acquainted with the foundations of physics while they immerse themselves in the joy of hands-on learning. They will learn about gravity, energy, and structural integrity as they discover how roller coasters work and what makes them safe. Working in teams with guidance from high school Peer Instructors and professional engineers, participants will design and produce a scaled model of a roller coaster that showcases their knowledge of physics fundamentals. They will also use their knowledge of physics to build their own Rube Goldberg machines as well as tackle a number of design challenges.
Session I is open to students in Santa Clara County and will be held from:
Monday, June 16th - Friday, June 20th, 2008.
Session II is open to students in Lawrence, MA and will be held from:
Monday, June 23rd - Friday, June 27th, 2008.
Participants should be dropped off at 8:30AM and picked up at 2:30PM daily for both sessions.
